Here is a paper that should have been done already for my Spanish class, here is the version en ingles. I'm a queen of bullshit papers. I'll put up the Spanish version soon, when I'm done translating it.

Health Problems

A few of the biggest health problems affecting society presently are the obesity, cancer, and AIDS epidemic. As devastating as these illnesses are, all three are very preventable. The soaring statistics are evidence of many things such as ignorance, corporate greed, and failure to take care of one’s personal health.

In the case of obesity, I feel that the people here in the United States are bombarded with advertising that appeals to the basest, most reptilian part of our anatomy. We are constantly reminded of cheap slogans by companies like McDonalds and Burger King, with words like “Have it your way” and “I’m loving it.” This tricks a lot of people into instant gratification and they don’t think about the consequence of eating this poison passing as actual food until they get an early case scourges such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, colon cancer. Many of these so called foods are loaded with treats such as high saturated fat and high fructose corn syrup, a sugar so intense that it causes the release of self-addicting opiates in the brain, as in the case of a heroine or morphine loser. Perhaps this is why we feel extremely exhausted and a bit dizzy after eating “Whoppers” and French fries.

This leads me into the cancer issue. The last few decades have been witness to a rise in cancer cases like never before in history. I believe it is due mainly to unhealthy health habits, the stress of modern life, and the chemicals from industrialization. When the doctor tells you to change your way of life, you usually try your best to drink more water, eat less fat and processed foods, exercise more, stop smoking. But it is not always that simple. The tap water is horrible for you and the ozone layer is depleting all the while the polar ice caps are melting as fast as ice cubes in a warm cup of tea from the global warming. Then people do incredibly dumb and vain things such as sun tanning, skin bleaching, excessive hair coloring, smoking, eating junk food, etc. And sadly, many who develop cancer have often tried their best to protect their health and still end up in chemotherapy, a process that often has a very low success rate.

AIDS is a horrifying disease. Supposedly no one knows exactly where the HIV virus that causes it came from, ,but in the third world it’s leaving millions of people dead and many more children orphaned so they can be picked up by Angelina Jolie’s and Madonna’s with guardian angel complexes. Too many people think that a condom is enough to save you from contracting HIV, and even weirder still, there have been thousands of documented cases where people lived fine with the disease until they started to take the medications, dying a slow and painful death. I only hope that more education will slow the numbers of causalities. Still, when a disease like AIDS breeds such ignorance that grown men are convinced they need to assault virgin girls in hopes of a cure, I wonder if it could get any worse.

There are a multitude of health dangers in our current ages, and I hope as a young person with my life still ahead of me to avoid them as much as possible by maintaining a proper diet, refraining from smoking, avoiding unsafe sex, and avoiding other tempting yet destructive behaviors. I also hope I can help educate other people in these matters, because ignorance is one of the best killers. Two of the most precious personal gifts in my opinion are the mind and one’s health.
Note: I seriously laugh at the thought of anyone stealing this! I know I haven't gone into all the reasons/causes for these issues, and there is much more underneath the surface, but actually, the composition only had to be 75% of a double spaced page. Yeah, that's right. Yet I was in a ranty ass mood yesterday, and that is what I churned out. Time constraints usually prevent one from making a more in-depth analysis.

Why I'm Vegetarian

********************************************************

Several months ago I made the decision to give up all meat as soon as I moved into my first apartment. I felt finally free to make my own decisions about daily meals and felt a few steps closers to having control over my health.

Being a college student, I have to admit the stress sometimes is overwhelming and I do snack on processed foods from time to time, but I always try my best to choose foods that have no animal by product in them. I usually get cravings for Kashi bars, wheat pretzels, roasted nuts, baked lays, etc. It's sure a step down from poison like dorritos, McDonalds, etc.

About a week and a half ago, I did a little experiment with my food intake to see to observe the changes in my body. In my 3-d design class, we were assigned the task of constructing a fully functional portable chair out of cardboard. I don't really want to get into the specifics of how this was to be down, but let me tell you, I was stressed to the umpteenth about it.

So naturally, well, more like UNnaturally, I was having fun at places like McDonalds and Hungry Howie's. I didn't purchase anything with meat in it, but I took advantage of delightful little things like apple pie, french fries, howie bread, and garden salads. I have always been prone to acne, but the weather conditions aggravated my face like the plague! Well, not really, but I'm a girl, so I can exaggerate.

Anyway, add the stress of art projects, 2 tests in the last week, and zits are throwing a party on my face! I wear my hair natural, being in the teenage stage of dreds, and boy was my scalp dry. Weeew. So I'm thinking, something HAS to be done. I'm having enough of my trip back to days of being a human trash bin!

These last couple of days I've been drinking green tea, chamomile, and Peach Ceylon. I've cut almost all of the gluten out of my diet, save for oatmeal. I went to the grocery store to pick up decent things like fresh veggies and fruits. And to my pleasant surprise, I found little vegan Indian cuisine boxes for 2 bucks at BIG LOTS.

Big Lots, if you have no idea JUST WHAT IN ALL OF TARNATION of which I am speaking, is a one of those low-price bargain bin chains probably local to Northeast Ohio. I picked up some Saage Chole (spicy spinach and chick peas) and a lentil dish courtesy of The Tamarind Tree company. All the entrees come with a serving of brown rice, and are completely free of preservatives. I am so amazed I found this in that crazy store of all places. Score for vegan bargains!! Big Lots also had nori seaweed rice crackers, which I gladly picked up ( I know someone's gagging at the thought right now, but I love them) among other crazy ethnic foodstuffs. It was a shame the wasabi crackers were out of stock.

On another positive note, I was looking for online articles and information about Vegan Transitions and I found this absolutely wonderful and engaging story of Shannon Oliver, a former food addict and adamant carnivore who took a trip to Africa that changed his life FOREVER. It truly resonated with me because as a young black woman myself I definitely can related to the those days of Southern-style soul food cooking. I'm only 2 generations removed from the south on my mother's side of the family, and one generation on my father's. To be honest with you, my paternal grandfather spoke Haitian Creole by way of Louisiana and kept hunting dogs in his back yard while he was "up Norf". He used to feed them grits, corn, beans, scrambled eggs, pork, beef, bones. Those dogs were, what you could call, "porked up good."

Hmm, I still suck at slang.

Anyway, Shannon's journey is so and reading it has given me alot of inspiration and I know that I'm doing the right thing and I will only get better. We as human beings weren't meant to be eating this stuff. Is it any wonder that the Black community has so many health problems? On top of things such as racial, social, and financial discrimination, a poor diet is literally a death sentence. I don't buy that genetically predisposed "scientific" jargon and I don't want any part of it!

Fav Animals:

Don't really have a fav anything, but I really like turtles, elephants, stupid fish, Meerkats, crazy little dogs, kittens...even though I am horribly allergic, cows, potbellie piggys (that's why I don't eat them, plus they eat almost anything), horses, sharks, and those little loopy lemur thingies. And wolves.

Status: Single

Languages: English and some Spanish (conversational) , although I'm interested in Japanese, Swahili, Arabic, and Hindi.

I love trying weird and new things, as longs as it's not too wacky. I have my limits.

I am a procrastinatron!

I also like to cook, although, honestly, I don't think I'm that good.

****************************************************

I have my own apartment!!! Parties! Well....not really. But it's good to have independence.

Now I have to find a way to pay the bills. I have money saved up, but that is not enough.

I went to go see The Roots in Cleveland at Case Western's auditorium. Excellent show as always. The crew always gives alot of energy. I haven't been to one "lame" show yet. It was my third Saturday night. Now that I think about it, I've seen them every year of college just about. Btw, If you don't have the new album, COP IT!!! They came correct, fa sho. It might not be every one's favorite, but it is definitely a product of the times, como el album de Gnarl's Barkley, "St. Elsewhere." Btw, putas, get that one too.

The only real gripe I had was the drunk scenish nerds jumping all over the place. And drunk white kids who couldn't dance. But that's a staple at every show. It was nice to see a sizeable amount of Black attendees there also, given the location. It's usually always a mixed crowd when the band comes to Northeast Ohio. And I saw quite a few Asians and Latinos. Incidentally, the group of drunkards I was near appeared to be Middle Eastern.

We got an encore, and the crowd went wild! Probably one of the best I've witnessed live, honestly.

Hmm...kinda behind in school assignments. I have been preparing/moving for the past 4 weeks, being generally stressed out, and missed some classes I really shouldn' t have. Thankfully, I've woken up and gotten it together.

I also ordered a tablet off Ebay!!!!! And got a buttload of digital painting programs....digital art, here I come. I still desire to focus on traditional works also. Fortunately, my design teacher will take care of that para mi! Ay carrumba.

Going to dye my hair once more, then start some dreadlocks, in the next month or so. I need some deep conditioning. I might have Jamaican Mall start them off for me, but I don't know if I can even afford that. I wonder what color I should go for???

Also great news...going to driving school! Ask me later why I don't have my license, it's a long story. Many involving living on campus for too long. Relying on my mother and relatives for too long.

Thanks to my sister Nesha for being supportive. Nobody's gonna hold us back, hermanita!

Something random I gotta mention. Now that I live in the actual projects, mas o menos, I am subjected to a variety of thrills, abuses, and noises. yay!
Like my overly "active" neighbors above. One time this week, I swear I heard rhythmic creaking noises above my bedroom. And you wonder why I'm always playing music. They like to stomp around alot at 4 o clock in the morning. Must be having lots of fun...Also heard one of the most talented whistlers in all my life, to the tune of Outkast's "Spottieottiedopalicious".
Now I know alot of you out there are familiar with that joint. The melodic section is deeply syncopated and rhythmic. It's one of my fav songs. Anyway, whoever this person was, had it NOTE FOR NOTE. Sounded like it was atleast a block away, this stuff was so loud and clear, I thought it was being played on a radio.....sigh...the wonderful paradigm of an overwhelming talent sprung from the american urban condition. I wish I could have recorded it.

Hasta luego, problamente muy muy luego putas, porque soy perezosa. Pero me les encantan.

Free internets!!! Ssssh...it's a secret! lolol

Also, I'm really warming up to the idea of request, but 2-3 at a time. I don't want to commision yet, because I feel I need more practice. Come on, people, free art!!!! I've had a really long block.
